The color change is a reliable indicator. That isn't to say you shouldn't use other means.

I am not aware of any indicator color that you can add to an existing product. The indicator absorbent is manufactured that way and I don't think it's possible to enable such functionality after the fact. It is debatable anyway, whether you should rely on the absorbent color indicator as a reliable means to determine when the chemical is saturated with CO2. There's plenty of opinion out there on the internet both pro and con. My personal taste is for a CO2 sensor. 
 
In regards to amount of absorbent, yes you've calculated correctly. Hence the Micropore ExtendAir option. Though more expensive than sofnolime, it is also likely easier to handle, change, and take up less room.
