Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] oxygen use
Hi Alan,
I am not aware of any indicator color that you can add to an existing
product. The indicator absorbent is manufactured that way and I don't
think it's possible to enable such functionality after the fact. It is
debatable anyway, whether you should rely on the absorbent color
indicator as a reliable means to determine when the chemical is
saturated with CO2. There's plenty of opinion out there on the internet
both pro and con. My personal taste is for a CO2 sensor.
In regards to amount of absorbent, yes you've calculated correctly.
Hence the Micropore ExtendAir option. Though more expensive than
sofnolime, it is also likely easier to handle, change, and take up less
room.

Thanks Jon, great stuff.
You mention using clear canisters and an indicating chemical in the
scrubber design.
Is this a separate chemical you can add to the absorbent? I have 20kg
of Sofnalime
which is non indicating and would like to change that.
Also I calculated that at 1/2 a liter of O2 consumption a scrubber
would last 200 minutes per
kg of absorbent. I seem to remember that ABS recommended 3 days air
supply on a one man sub.
Does this mean they expect me to take down 20kg of absorbent?
Thanks Alan
