Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] 2 Man Sub From Boston?

Possibly because the STAR program was underway with the original 1-man sub, and Ashera was contracted for with that as a design basis. They built the sub for $25K in six months from handshake to champagne on the dock. Of course they do have a pretty sizeable machine shop up there

Vance,
Thanks, I keep forgetting that.  Someplace there is a reference that ties the Asherah and STAR I together.

Jay,
STAR 1 was a 48" D 1-man boat built as a home project by 2 EB engineers which served as a test bed and the foundation fo r the STAR program. Then Ashera was built for George Bass (it had no STAR designation. Then STAR II and III by EB for contract work. STAR, for those who don't know, is an acronym for Submersible, Test And Research.

I know this monster!  She was in a warehouse along with the remains of Asherah (STAR I) while we were in drydock in South Boston back in 1978-79 timeframe.  Visited the warehouse several times but never was able to see her in the water.  From a number of scientists/engineers that had an association with the boat, understood that she had major stability issues.  They tried to sell her for big bucks but had no takers.
