[PSUBS-MAILIST] 2 part coupling (was STANAG NATO flange)

I just wanted to point out something about that trunk coupling photograph - You can see the hydraulic cylinders which presumably raise or lower the flange, and which would also serve as a load distribution mechanism to ensure that the flange is evenly loaded.  The two part flange coupling itself is not actuated by cylinders, but rather by a pair of ACME screws which are presumably driven by hydraulic rotary actuators, or which may be electric.  In any case, the screw mechanism is an important feature because the threaded mechanism is self-locking, meaning that the screws cannot be backdriven in the event of hydraulic or power failure, thus keeping the divers safe.  Accomplishing the same thing with cylinders would require a ratchet lock or some other mechanical means of providing a fail safe.
