RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] hard ballast

I have a hard VBT inside Snoopy. It works fine. But I've also seen K250s that get by perfectly well with soft ballast only, and it makes the difference between the K250 being a one person or a two person boat -- the darned VBT takes up that much space right in the middle of the cabin. It also gets in your way for maintenance, and is so heavy I can only lift it out of the boat with a shop crane. My current project does away with hard VBT and will just use soft, plus a vertical thruster with fine speed control.

The simplest thing in the world is what Mark Ragan does. He has flexible plastic water containers that I believe he bought at a camping store. He fills them without any plumbing whatsoever, and then can push them around inside the cabin to adjust trim, or use them as pillows. It's "one way" buoyancy adjustment in the sense you can't blow VBT submerged. But once you have your weight right, you don't need to do that anyway.

Brian,
The K-250s have internal tanks, and a few others did. Mostly soft tanks w/pumps. Hard tanks are heavy, cumbersome and expose crew to potential high pressure leakage. Besides, they are almost always in the way. Put them outside.

Hi Brian,

I'm not sure of the k-Boats, but for what it's worth my hard ballast tanks will be inside of my pressure hull. IIt sure simplifies plumbing and maintenance!

Best Regards,
