Frank, could you elaborate a bit on this?  My weldment experience is mostly 
with large mining machinery where, for example, 4" plate is welded to 6" 
plate, in which case, where access permits, a double-V two sided weld is 
always specified because it uses half as much weld material as a single V.  
Lay the root, perhaps another pass or two, then backgouge into the root from 
the opposite side, and begin to lay passes on both sides.  Obviously, with 
thin plate the cost issue isn't there, but you mention reduced distorsion, 
and I always thought that distorsion was directional?  Wouldn't welding from 
both sides help to minimize distorsion?
