Phil, its really interesting to hear how you make all your fittings.
Sounds like using stainless rings is the way to go for me as well and
not bother with the cladding which is proving awkward.
So ive got 2 options i think. One is to weld on short stainless rings
the same OD and thickness of the tubes (or slightly thicker) and then
machine as per the plans, or just make up stainless bolt together
flanges like a normal hatch. I like that idea, sounds really easy!
Either way the cladding is coming off.
Alec, i dont suppose you have any pictures of your cladding and
stainless seats? Also, the rods im using for stainless welding are
lincoln Arosta 309Mo. Classification is (AWS) E309LMo-16 or (EN) E 23
12 2 L R 32.
John Farrington seemed to make a real good job of the cladding on his
site. He made it look really easy, which its not.
Also, just reading another post. Jim K, how did you pressure test your
tanks? I'd like to do the same to my variable which is complete. I
assume you filled it with water and attached it to your air tools
pressure tank somehow? i was thinking of using a diving cylinder, but
i'd need to rig up some sort of pressure regulator as i dont really
fancy just cracking the thing to 220psi all in one go....

I wonder whatever happened to the K-350 project. John and Monica seemed
to have a handle on it, got it pretty much ready to sandblast and paint,
and then...nothing. Maybe they're growing vegetables in it.

When I did mine, I found the cladding worked well on the pods but not at
all on the endcaps. So I ended up with SS rings on those endcaps mating
with cladded seats. What made it work on the pods was the fact I was
welding out from a SS shoulder. On the endcaps, being just an edge, the
SS would take on a rounded section and I would have had to go on adding
SS forever to get sufficient width.
John Farrington managed to do it with cladding on both sides, he must be
a better welder than I.

When you weld those rings on, be sure to use 309L wire. Not 309 without
the L, nor any other kind -- 309L only, or it'll crack!

Hi Everyone.
I made a cock up and just wanted to see what you all think.
I was machining the battery pods with the stainless cladding. i overdid
it on the last pass and machined back down to the mild steel pipe.
oops.
Anyway, i have re welded it all back so im back to square one. But i
still dont like this method.
The cladding method is awkward and im going to have to leave a little
bevel at the edge to leave enough stainless on (second attempt).
And i dont think i'll be able to clad and machine the cap to have the o
ring groove without machining off most of the stainless cladding, it
just seems like to much machining. But the alternative is to machine
and paint, but then i have to allow for paint thickness and im sure the
paint will end up getting knocked off .
I'm tempted to machine the whole lot off and then get 4 stainless rings
made up the same OD as the pipe (12 inch). 10mm thick and about an inch
in length and weld them to the ends of the pipe and caps. Then i can
machine as much as i like and get a really good fit.
Would that work? im not sure i could weld the small pipe tubes on
without distorting them?
or, i could get 2 stainless endcaps? Is that possible? Not sure and
that sounds very expensive.
Any thoughts, ideas anyone?
