[PSUBS-MAILIST] Battery Pods Blunder.

Hello James:
Re: SS 'buttering/cladding' versus solid SS rings. On all our subs,
we opt for solid SS rings. The large rings (entry hatch/vision domes)y are
machined to rough diamensionr prior to welding and then finished/faced
after welding. (the hulls are held in a massive jig and the hatch face
machined by a huge 'swinging arm' horizontal mill).
FYI, SS welds to mild steel beautifully.
For DeepWorkers, we hydrocut the large rings out of 3.5 inch thick
stainless plate - then use the internal piece for successively smaller
rings and plates ( penetrator plates/penetrator plate female receivers)
right down to SS latch bushings and hull-separation feed-thrus. Every
single O ring in every model sub is housed in solid SS. It is expensive,
but easily worth it, IMHO.
On the Aquarius-style hulls with the large (40") viewing
semisphere, we use SS forgings for the dome ring and the large (16") aft
flat ports. Pain in the ass to wait for them, but less cost.
