RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] ADS NewtSuit/HardSuit Applications

Cody:
If you're looking for ADS related books, you're probably better off with
'Deep Diving & Submarine operastions" by Sir Robert H. Davis - than with
'Ironsuits' - I know Gary Harris and he's done some terrific stuff on the
history of space suits - also, he wrote a pretty good history of cajun
helmet developer Joe Savoie - but his litlle ADS book has significant
errors related to the Newtsuit and some other stuff.
The German Kuhnke & Neufeldt ( and their Italian licensee Galeazzi) is a
simple design to start with - although a ball & socket ( which I'm not a
great fan of) - it's about as straightforward as you'll find - there's a
line drawing of it in 'Deep Diving & sub ops' - there should lots of
Galeazzi info on the net. If you can find an old issue of Mike Menduno's
tek-diving mag 'Aqua corps' called 'Hard' (his issues were all themed)
there's a basic drawing of an oil supported ADS rotary joint (don't copy
that puppy, though, the patent is still in effect!).
Also, don't get mislead by early inventor's patent claims -
probably 90% or more, of the patented ADS joint couldn't have worked at
pressure- and indicate that the inventor didn't understand the basic
physics involved. Some of the suits that were built reached the depths
claimed, but the joint had turned to concrete long before - and the suit
was acting as a simple one-at observation bell. But, hey, better'n not
being there at all - and some impressive salvage work was carried out by
these frozen-limbed rigs directing grab buckets, clamshells, etc.
I give a lot of talks on ADS operations - in various parts of the
world - a question I get fairly often is "why not just use an ROV?" - or,
"why build a submarine - a ROV is the same as being there, isn't it?"
One stock answer (depending on the crowd) is: Right, . . . and phone sex
is the same as the real thing, isn't it?" (G)
Building a garage "Wasp' or "Newtsuit" isn't a slam-dunk, but , like the
man says "if it was easy, everyone 'd be doin' it!"
