FYI, some years ago
I got a fluxgate compass and tested it on the sub. I found it had to be
mounted at least three feet away from the hull to get acceptable readings. A big
limitation of the test was that it was conducted on land, so I wasn't
running any thrusters under load - hence the steel was a factor but the
electrical currents weren't realistic.
