RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Quenching question....

James,

Steel should be cooled down as slow as possible to prevent hardening and
residual stress.
So just leave it for a while after welding /hot bending. Even mild steel,
just to be sure.

Onderwerp: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Quenching question....

Hi All,

yet another question...

Im waiting for a shipment of pipe and steel to start work on the battery
pods, VBT, through hulls etc.

In the meantime, im making a few minor things this weekend such as the hatch
hinge and lifting eyes etc.

I was looking at John Farringtons website to see how he made the lifting
eyes. Simple enough, but then i came accross this page.

http://www.prismnet.com/~jrf/SubPics/image540.html

I dont think these u shaped pieces should have been quenched like this. Do
you think he's deliberetly hardening them? He doesnt say why he did this
and there is no indication of him tempering them afterwards, so i assume he
perhaps doesnt realise whats happening? Does it matter? What do you all
think??

Sorry, its a sloooow day at work and im daydreaming about my weekends sub
building i'll be doing.....

Thanks again
James
