Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Penetration problems

James,

The original K-350 design uses cables to transfer the power from each battery pod to the hull. I researched the company that made the original cables and couldn't find it. I assume they went out of business since the design was made up. Those cables connected into the stainless steel rings welded into each pod and ran up to two similar rings welded in the aft hull end cap. I spoke to the Captain about it and he said he did it that way because one of the certifying agencies or a purchaser (I forget which) required the cables and would not let him connect directly through to the hull. I'm sure there are other companies that make similar cables if you want to go that route, but I'd check what their through hull connection requirements are. You may need threaded rings or something different then the design.

I decided to save the money all that would be and do it with more labor instead. I made those big bulky chunks of steel with a separate hole for each conductor. My conductors are brass threaded rods. Each rod passes through plastic spacers, and is held in with nuts and washers on each end. The void around the rods is totally filled with epoxy. No gas can leak through, and if a pod blew, water won't enter the hull. My only danger is if I have a total melt down. The epoxy and plastic can melt but the nuts and washers should still hold the rods in place, although they might not be totally water tight.

Don't eliminate the 2X pipe connections. You'll need them to vent your pods while charging. I leave mine open any time I'm not diving the sub. 2X pipe is hard to find so I just got a chunk of 1018 bar stock and turned and bored it to match what 2X pipe would be.

If you look at pics of my battery pods you will see that I originally put the cable connections in them but then changed my mind and made stainless steel caps for the connection points.

Dan H.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Penetration problems

Hi All.

Not sure this will get through the spam filter with that title :)

Anyway, could someone give me a hand with this. K350 plans.

Im getting all the through hulls sorted and ive come up all confused.

Most through hulls are drawn in detail and look simple enough, but the main power through hull looks like its missing information to me.

For the battery pods, there are 2x vents (which i am not actually going to install as vents) and the main power through hull. There is a "main power through hull" shown on the plans but it just seems to be a hull reinforcment ring and i cant find anywhere the details for the actual electrical connection part. ?? Im sure i have all the pages, so im assuming its yet another thing thats missing?

Also, Dan H and John Farrnington both put the main power through hull in line with the vents, which seems correct, but im sure on the plans it shows the main power through hull in a different place. ???

However, i did look rather briefly at lunch time, so i might have missed a page or something. Will double check again when i get back from work but i thought id just see what you all think.

Thanks as always
James
