Hi Bryce. Welcome aboard and good luck on your project. You are taking the
right steps in contemplating a personal submarine. Decide what the sub is going
to accomplish, and the design and specifications will develop over time. There's
lots of home work to do before you start to build, and it's a lot of fun
designing your own sub. Most guys I've met started with the same process you've
chosen, ie. get a good idea what you want the sub for.
If you want a sub to cross the ocean, you might consider taking a sail boat
out for a few days, and experience what it's like to be out there for
an extended time.
I spent two weeks on a 60 ft. sailboat in Greece and it was a great
learning experience.
I spent 10 days on a 35 ft. boat in the Virgin Islands, and it got a little
crowded, but still was fun. I wouldn't really call that "open ocean" and we
stayed anchored in port each night on different islands, but I'd be reluctant to
take any boat that small across the ocean. Typically, 50 to 60 feet is the
minimum size for any craft sailing out there.
My little sub displaces about 3 1/2 tons so will weigh more or less that
much on a trailer. Take a look at the psubs site at the UC3 project being built.
That is probably the minimum size for open ocean sailing.
