Hi James,
I only used the P & O steel because that was the drop-off that I purchased
from the steel supplier and that steel was only used on the hinges and other
areas that are not Pressure Hull Components.
The entire pressure hull is made of 516 Grade 70.

Sorry about the confusion. P & O is an abreviation for pickled in oil
steel.
Oh right. I've never heard of that before. Is there any reason you are
using that particular type?
the dome mounting arrangement sounds interesting. Keep the pictures coming
to the projects page so we can all keep up with how your getting along.
Im not sure about the SS pricing, i thought it sounded expensive, compared
to what the guys can get on mainland EU.
Still, i don't have much choice here.

I will have a 9 - 12 inch long tapered extention for the front of the sub
which will be 48 inches in diameter at the point where it meets the hull.
after the dome arrives and I have exact dimensioins I will have the pieces
for the seat and cone area formed. I will then fully weld this subweldment
together then have the entire thing machined either on a large lathe or a
CNC mill with a rotating table.
When this is complete the entire subweldment will be welded to the front of
my pressure vessel. Because of the cone shape and the distance this should
eliminate or at least minimize the possibility of weld distortion at the
seat area.
Your Stainless pricing seems very good, possibly because of our weakening
dollar!

The hinge is P&O steel and it does look like stainless, but it is not.
Ah i see. It certainly look like SS. Anyway, im not sure what you mean by
P&O steel? I even googled it and couldn't come up with what you mean?!
I just called my steel supplier and a piece of 12 x 40 x 1000 mm A4
stainless (which is what i will need for the hinge frame) is ?26,(about
$50). I know its a bit expensive, but i think in the grand scale of how
much the project is costing, probably worth it, so im going to re-make the
hinge bracket in SS.
The seat for the domed window is not started yet because I want to have
the
window in hand before beginning to be sure I have the proper fit.
Ah i see. Im really interested in this bit as im going to be doing similar
myself.
This sub will streaching my budget enough as it is, So I am spending my
money on items that will make it simple to operate on longer missions etc.
Finally the weather is going to be good this weekend so i should be able to
crack on with getting some work done on the sub.

Pictures look great of your project. I hadn't seen these before.
It looks like youve used all stainless steel for your hatch hinge assembly?
I've been thinking of changing mine. I made my hinge assembly already and
although the bar is SS, the brackets are not. So i think im going to change
it to SS like yours as it looks like it will be a source of corrosion
otherwise where the bar passes through the brackets.
Do you have any pics/ideas for your dome seat? Have you machined it
already?
