The short answer, given the circumstances of the incident, it was not a good outcome. For the long and complete answer look for a book written by Roger Chapman titled "No Time On Our Side." 

Since it was the tail sphere that flooded, dropping the weight (on the personnel sphere) only placed the vehicle in a vertical position and created a great deal of other problems for the "two Rogers."
