RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Acrylic dome (was rotary table)

Jon, Brian, Brent

It started as we need a replacement dome for the sgt peppers. Carsten, me and a acrylic company develop tools and method to thermoform a 580 mm O.D.dome from 40  mm sheet.  Not easy as some 1000 dollar material disappeared in the bin.

I found a way to machine the flange on the bridgeport CNC with rotary table (soon CNC!!)

The Size is perfect and the price is much better than a cast one. So Nemo has one of these domes ( a 130 deg version for bowdome) and one is gone to Norway for the Ymer project.  My new project will also use 2 to3 of these domes

After Thermoforming the dome is cooled very slowly. What we think is that the dome has to be annealed after machining at 80 deg Celcius @24 Hours.

Hi Emile,

Very impressive photos.  I'm curious if you have facilities to anneal the dome after machining?  Also, can you quantify "small scale sale"?  What's your capacity for production and/or desire for production?  Psubbers are always looking for suppliers.

Jon
