Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Bad Day.

Hello All.

Thanks for the advice.   I like Carstens idea best.  "Scrap it and build a bigger boat".  I will start tomorrow.

But today, i think i might try and fix the port.

There definitly is not any remains of the broken drill in there.  The broken end eventually came out in one complete piece.

So, i think i will heat it to red hot.  Weld it closed, let it cool slowly and then file it flat.  I cant get it back on the lathe without a lot of hastle.

Once ive done that. i will try and drill it again in the right place.

I will let you know how it goes later today and take some pictures so you can see the disaster.....

Right, im off to get on with it.....

James

James,

There are some small diamond core drilling bits that I use for drilling stone, but I was thinking they might work for your problem. I use a drill press and a large syringe filled with water to keep a steady stream of water on the cutting surfaces to cool it and remove the particulates.  If that works, then if the hole is not to large, proceed as planned. If the hole is to large then I like the idea of welding it shut and redrilling the hole to the exact size you want.  If you can't reasonably remove the bit tip, then I would go Emile's route. "Also option 2 . You can close the hole by welding or weld a stud bolt on that place ."

Carsten,

The North Idaho way would be to make big hole with the blue tipped saw, then pound in a wood plug, then hold the ring on with a sheet rock screw and a couple of fender washers. But we would be sorely temped to use duct tape on any given Monday. ; )'

Cheers,
Brent Hartwig
