Hi Jim. I too have the Minnkota motors and controllers. I'm not too worried
about exact speed match on them. I'm using 4 motors and 4 controllers. I can
envision the need to be able to run each motor in a different direction, and the
gear set-up on the joystick will let me adjust the spin on the controller knob
so that a pretty close speed adjustment can be had.
I have two motors in tandem on the back end, but even there, I want to be
able to run one forward and one reverse. ( for tight turns )
Do you remember the movie ''Red October'' when the sub was headed for the
sea mount with a torpedo crawling up his ass ? The captain waited until the
last moment and then put one propeller in full reverse while the other was full
ahead. I know it was just a hollywood movie, but it should help in a tight turn
all the same.
The other two motors are mounted one on each side, and will also be able to
run those in opposite directions. Steering will be done mostly with rudders on
the back but can be helped with the side motors.
The speed controllers were $129 each ( pretty cheap) and each will have
it's own joystick. I like the way they connect to the motors and batteries. No
complicated wiring, just plug in and go. You'll see them when you come out. Very
simple, waterproof, replaceable, compact, and guaranteed !----- well, OK, I'll
have to see about that, Maybe not if it's used in a sub and not as a repair part
for a store bought trolling motor.
