Dan, I was thinking that if the you were not unconscious, and you had a high pressure air compressor rated to run off the subs power, you could use it to send excess air out of the sub to keep the sub interior at 1ATM. Also another option is to have the compressor set up with a special pressure regulator to remove excess air from the pressure hull automatically. This way since in the normal process of bringing in new air or O2 to your sub it would keep the pressure at 1ATM as well as work if your unconscious. This also would be helpful if your breathing from a SCUBA setup that you have in your sub for back-up. The exit pipe from the compressor would have a check valve as backup to keep water out of that line. As for the two valve setup for bringing in new air and a return line attached at the other end of the sub to remove bad air, I think there are some different configurations to consider. For both lines you can have both internal and external valves to operate them. The internal valves would need to be left open all the time unless you noticed a problem. The external valves could have some sort of easy to use keeper locks on them to keep them from being opened by accident. The keepers wouldn't need a key of any kind. For the exhaust line you can have a inline 1ATM pop off type one way valve, much like we use for hyperbaric chambers, to keep water from coming in even if you don't turn off the internal valve to it. For the intake line you can leave the interior valve open but if goes down to the bottom of the sub and then turns up and into a much larger tube that has a gravity ball device screwed onto it that keeps water from coming into the sub. I don't know the proper name for that device. I see it all the time used on large irrigation system. It allows the air out of the pipes, but when water hits the hollow plastic ball, it floats up and seals the exit hole. If you can find one with a threaded exit, you could add a length of pipe to it, to keep from getting water sprayed on you or the sub equipment. Also I think you need really easy to read exterior labels on or next to the two valves, so there is no mix-up. Perhaps even in more then one language. Perhaps even having the intake line valve painted green and the exhaust painted red.
