Believe or not - the outboard motor consept was used on UC1 FReya during
2003 and 2004. I used a 5 hk 2 stroke standard long legged outboard to propel
Freya out to sea when conditions permittet it. When on position the outborad was
taken inbord, and we dived. At 5 Hk she made some 3.5 to 4 knots.
The system suffered from three problems:
1. When i waves higher than 0.5 meters the motor would sometimes get so
high up that the propeller got into air, and sekonds later the entire outbord
would be submerged. Ultimately this ment that the system was oly function at
very nice conditions.
Solution: super long leg, better placement ( eg. a well in the aft part of
boat )
2. The engine could not be completely free of gasoline when sotored onboad,
causing problem with bad gasoline smell in the small confined space.
Solution: outside container / store on boat
3. People laughed and asked even more stupid questions.
Solution A: Give the Captian of the boat a Luger and some nine milimeter
ammo.
Solution B: Explain the consept.
With develupment its not an imposible approch. your boats speed will not be
much better with big engine, at 5 meters Freyas chritiacl hull speed was about
four knots, and that canot prectically be exceded. A light small engine might be
preffered.
