RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hydrophone Construction Article

Jay,

I have seen a simular article on these dipping hydrophones before. I found it so intresting that I made several using 35mm film casings. In short, The performance was not what I was in need of in the way of fine detection, The mineral oil was difficult to work with without spilling, and pressure killed them within a short time. I did find working with them to be fun and a simple set of instructions on the web helped me along the way. Some used eletrit mikes while others asked for piezo elements. I am sure that once he flooding problems are solved on the disk type, it will work well for many of us. Were you ever able to hear with the hydrophone provided to you? Do you think you can redesign it to withstand pressure?
Thank you for the article again as it was informative reading.

Finally getting my act together after a month of travel that included the
PSUB conference, historical research into the location of Simon Lake's
Defender submarine, and meeting with George Kittredge.

Came across an article entitled "Build Yourself A Hydrophone" in the Fall
2007 issue of BoatWorks magazine that might be of interest to a number of
members. I have taken the liberty of scanning it into a PDF file and
posting it at http://download.yousendit.com/68C74BF93BB101D7 (2.74 Mb in
size) for those of you that might want to review the article.

A skimmer afloat is but a submarine, so poorly built it will not plunge.
