A very good example of this is in the home-built rebreather
world. A semi-closed circuit rebreather is rather easy to build but the
more complicated fully closed circuit unit requires electronics to be
functional. While you will find features and algorithms discussed, the
electronic circuits will not be posted on the web either on a web page or email
lists. Once you have a working electronic circuit that you developed on
your own, others will share more information via private email. This is a
thresh-hold that must be passed on your own to gain entry into the potentially
more hazardous world of fully closed circuit rebreathers. Maybe unfortunately we have no such thresh-hold in PSUBs and thus a
preponderance of somewhat questionable constructions. Both poorly designed/constructed
rebreathers and PSUBs can kill you quickly. Both losses are
sensationalistic in nature so the press latches onto an occurrence and blows it
way out of proportion to the actual tragedy. R/Jay Jay K. Jeffries Andros Is., Bahamas

[mailto:owner-personal_submersibles@psubs.org] On Behalf Of Jon Wallace I wouldn't characterize it
that way although I can understand why it may seem like that. If people
are holding back information, it's not because they want to force you into
self-discovery as some kind of lesson. It's likely because they are
afraid of potential liability issues associated with the transfer of
information. Jon |
