[PSUBS-MAILIST] S1-01 Engine Compartment and Trim Weight Placement

Here is a picture of the S1-01s engine compartment, I recently found and thought you guys might find interesting. You may notice that there is a bolt together flange just in front of the diesel engine. It's a really small area to work in.

I've been working on a idea for a large external locking ring and hinge mechanism for sealing a flange, some what like this one, but with the ability to open the engine compartment without removing any bolts. This would make opening the whole back of the sub quick and easy. You would of course need a outer fairing to cover the external locking ring for a more streamlined sub. But if a internal locking ring could be designed, that wouldn't be necessary.

Here is a drawing I found of the S1-01. Note the trim weight under the person in the prone position in the bow, and the internal MBT under the conning tower.

I didn't notice until I saw this side profile, that three of the four outer pressure hull sections are slightly conical.

A couple more pictures.

Here is a interesting quote I just found

"New Tecknology goes through three stages:

First, it is ridiculed by those ignorant of its potential

Next, it is subverted by those threatened by its potential

Finally, it is considered self-evident."
