That was very ordinary blue insulating foam from Home Depot. However,
the part looks way better in photos than in real life, it is definitely
not a high quality finish. If you look through the archives, there's a
posting from Dan H. in which he describes his process in great detail.

   The following is dirrected at Alec Smith or anyone who has inquired
as to the tail section construction of his flying sub photos found on
the picture exchange.
   Of what material was the original form created from as Styrofoam
dissolves with the application of fiber glass resin? POLYISOCYANATE?
The end product really is impressive! I would love someday to have these
skills.
