Dear Psubbers
A few minutes ago I placed one of the first
frames on the bow of UC3. The shape of the bow is very much a copy version
of Mr. Standfuss CSSX project. Its the same spatial idea - but its longer,
slimmer and more rounded. The hole boat owes a lot to Standfuss pioneering in
BIG psubs, yet its designed and shaped to replace Viagra for the crews who
will later on sail it on the high seas.
In my humble opinion...
To make a submarine - or an airplane - a
car or a rocket really work is not alone a question of hydrodynamics, fluid
dynamics and economy. These cold machines made of iron becomes alive when they
make their crew and passengers and makers proud and happy. The shape of
things tells stories...
Take a look at a Douglas Dakota DC-3 - and a
Messerschmitt Me 109 - or a Ju 87 Stuka - you will have no doubt about
witch on is aggressive and witch one is made for peace. The designers knew just
how to express these legendary machines mission - and to give the aircrews a
feeling of being very special.
Take a look at Queen Mary in Long Beach - look
at her elegant lines and beautiful smokestacks and compare it to a modern
cruiseship - with an oversize superstructure going twelve decks above the
hull and extending all the way to the bow - one is made for a nations
pride - the other for the money.
To me on of the greatest challenges in submarine
design is to tell a story - to make her beautiful ( you die if they are not
functional - so its also a challenge the make it work )
During wwII the typical uboat had a service life of
thre month - no reason to paint it - yet they did - wonder why ? Think of the
work of painting a VIIC white on the inside...
Many Psubbers work with versions of the excellent
K-250 design - and I have seen one slightly converted to look like Alvin - the
deep sea submersible the explored the wreck RMS Titanic. I love it...since a
K250 is really a midget - lower performance Alvin...my
applause...
This is of cause all just my personal opnions -
just shoot me down if you think a DC-3 look like it will never fly
!
All I really wished to say was - Its wonderful to
build submarines - go for it - learn all the dirty ticks and enjoy it
!
