Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Welders

Ray,

For all my non water tight welds I used a 250 amp miller MIG welder I paid around $1500 for about fifteen years ago.

For all my more critical welds, I used a Lincoln "torpedo style" welder. It's a very old motor generator set type of welder that sounds like a jet engine when it's spooling up and running but supplies perfect DC current. I paid $25 for it about twenty years ago. It's probably fifty years old. Since better rectifiers are now available they're not used much now because of the maintenance they required and the noise.

Like most of the other advice you already got on the subject, it's not as much the machine or what you pay for it. Just so it's large enough to handle the material thickness. It's like that old joke of asking directions to get to Carnegie hall............. Practice Practice Practice

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Welders

Hi,

For lunch today I dropped by the local AirGas store to
look at welders. I wanted something I can use on the
farm and to weld submarines.

Submarines got him. I mentioned welding 1/4" HY-80
steel. The guy visibally bristled with his superior
expertise and said I would need $10,000+ equipment to
weld.

Out of my price league and probably dead wrong.

You guys that have built subs, what welders do you
have? Did you weld the pressure hull yourselves or did
you part that out? If you parted out welding the
pressure hull did you supply the welder or did the
welder bring his own?

Thanks,
Ray
