Vance, a spring might work, although the pressure applied would be constant, not variable as would the external pressure of the surrounding water at depth. But on the other hand, a spring loaded compensator would be inexpensive ( my Scottish side is showing here ) and easy to maintain. If it leaked when you weren't down deep, like at the dock or on the trailer, you'd see the oil being pushed past the cylinder seals.
