Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] concrete sub - sand and gravel

Frank,
Good point,  but I don't think that would be a problem.  If it was done carefully and with vibrators I think you could eliminate any voids.  But maybe an alternative would be to have the ferro-cemet skin on the inside of the form and have a wood outside.   That way you wouldn't have to remove the inside forms and it would give you a chance design the inside better.  I was thinking of possibly installing the motor-generator inside the sub before the pour, essentially surrounding it with the poured concrete structure.  If you ever had to take the engine out you would have to destroy the sub.

When pouring with a wood form how do you prevent voids?    I assume with using wood forms the only way you would be aware of voids is after the fact,  after the cement cured and then you pull off the forms.

Just a thought....How do you know you don't have bubbles or other voids in the pour, if you can't see it?
Would a vacuum pump work to suck out the air as the cement is being injected?
Sorry, but I'm a welder, and like the idea of steel hulls.
If I want to add something, or repair the hull, or even cut in another window, I can break out the torch.
Is it possible to cut into a cement hull?
The main advantage I see of a concrete hull is its compressive strength.
Just seems like it would be hard to modify later.
