Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] concrete submarine /steel/concrete

I don't think redefining this is worth the effort, however, the term submersible was coined pre-heavy lift ship. Call 'em what you will, but I'll stick to the original. Vance

Vance,
That definition of “boats” doesn’t hold water any more due to the large capacity of heavy lift transport vessels these days.  The military subs with AIP easily fit on these vessels with room to spare.  Early military subs were transported on the deck of a larger vessel thus the term “boat” which is still used by submariners today.

Submersibles can be carried ON ships, submarines ARE ships. Vance

Gene,
By definition, it would still be a submersible as you have to come to the surface to replenish atmosphere and batteries.  The German and Swede AIP military subs are near submarine.

This thread is very interesting!  One thing you give up with a concrete hull is transportability.  I can pull a K350 with my F250 pickup....  not so with a concrete sub.  On the other hand,  a concrete submarine would be a submarine and not a submersible.
