Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Concrete submarine

calculate it the same way, tensile strength and compression strength.

Traditional concrete is an interesting material to use, and probably very practical... however it has damn near zero plasticity, and is prone to damage through shock, and may begin to crack under load. Once a crack happens the whole hull is worthless as you can't weld or repair a preasure vessel made of concrete. Chips might be less severe damage wise but still more of a problem than a dent on a metal hull (again you can't repair concrete in any meaningful way)

There is a plasticized concrete out there mentioned in a previous post that may alleviate some of the above problems... But...eh..

Ever hear of the great cement canoe race? Every engineering school has one, look em up and you'll see all sorts of interesting thoughts on concrete as material for a hull that can be transposed (with a little thought) into submarine hull thinking.

I have been looking around the net for some hours now, trying to to
find out more about C-subs. Does anybody know if there is a huge
difference in calculating the pressurehull capacity of a concrete hull
compared to a steel hull? As the guy claims on his web site: It cheap
and requires almost no maintenance.
One other thing. I have made a Mathcad sheet (si units) for
calculating stress in hull under external pressure. based on ABS rules
for building and classing underwater vehicles......
I have done the tubular part and will soon start on the spherical
part. Anybody interested in such a sheet?

Yeah the website is new (to me anyway). I think this guy was
posting to the psubs mailing list a couple of years back (and
also shared some pictures then). But the website has better
pictures. Hope we gave him a better welcome than he's getting on
rec.boats.building, one reply accusing him of faking the
pictures.... moron...
