As is the way in other engendering,  you drill 1 hole pore in the red lead etc. roll the drum (in this case the hull, and seal the hole with a bolt. This would not reduce the strength by much id the bolt is only 10mm.

Hello. I saw a psub that was 1/2 inch thick hardened boiler plate and was good to 1000 ft.

The builder used rolled " channel iron " at 3 inch by 1-1/2 inch.  The result was nice. The rings were rolled with the 3 inch flat to the inside, and it was very strong while not consuming much interior space. Once welded in place, the orientation made a " boxed " stiffener and you could crawl over them without any discomfort. Here's a little sketch.

My only problem would be that you can't reach the inside to paint it or monitor corrosion.
