At 150 feet the pressure is only 68 psi- a 3000 psi tank is more than
enough for deballasting- in fact a few 1000 meter subs still use
compressed air to deballast -

Archimedes is being designed for a crush depth of 300' and an
operational
depth of 150' at crush depth I won't be able to even fill the ballast
because the compressed gas will be at a lower PSI than the ambient
preasure.
(4410psi Ambient vs 3000psi in the pony... full) at operating depth I'll
have close to 600 psi to spare so I can blow and adjust the ballast at
depth.
I kept on running into the design problem of how to (cost effectively)
use
compressed gas in a ballast system and what I came up with is using a
scuba
tank... which automaticly limits me to 3000psi and thus a "floor" of 204
feet before I could no longer blow the tanks. I really wanted to design
something that would crush at 300m and operate at 150m but... I'm gonna
have
to settle for what I have if I want a soft ballast.

Why not just make it out of foam- I took a Styrofoam wig head down
2000
feet and it's still got at least 1/3 of it's volume-and floats just
fine-
how deep do you plan on going? so what if the foam looses a bit - or
even half it's buoyancy- it will still do what you need- and can't
flood, rust or implode!
I was attempting to machine the pieces for a metal "bobber" for my new
soft
ballast tank's water level indicator (Foam just gives at depth, so
that's no
good). The piece is essentially one piece 1cm in diameter 1mm thick
walls
and 1cm in length and another 5mm 1mm thick wall and 1cm in length
tube
with
two 1cm diameter 1mm thick "washer" end caps with a center bore hole
of
5mm.
I can get the pieces machine out great, that's the easy part. I'm
trying
to
weld them all together however and I end up with some really shitty
looking
welds. I've never attempted to weld something so "delicate" before.
What
I'm
trying to make here is a preasure proof bobber and the end product
should be
something like a hollow bearing.
All my welding is done via stick arc welding.
Any suggestions?
