Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Design Software

Shawn you obviously know your software, but both you and Dan both make a great case for simplicity. Alibre really looks good but I see what you meant when I saw the tutorials.

The laptop is just much more convenient than drafting supplies but I can't seem to get accurate enough scale with paint and word so I think something like Smartdraw is the better choice for now.

Already did a paper model Brian but the dog ate it.

Thanks

Joe

dont forget a compass...  screwed without one really.  :)

Ya know, people think manually drafting is cheap. It's NOT surprisingly enough.  I found this out a few weeks ago.  You can spend hundreds of dollars before you even draw anything, and this DOESNT include a drafting table.  A good drafting table will cost $400+.  There is a new one out called the Alvin Creative Center though.  It's about $175 and well worth it I think (comes with light, table, chair, base, containers, etc).  But, you still have to buy a large T-bar in order to get squared, they're like 30 bucks.

My opinion is, if you just want to jot down scaled ideas then dont bother with serious drafting equipment and/or software.  Just use programs like SmartDraw, Visio, even Powerpoint, or just stick with Paint and Word.  Dont forget all the freeware out there too for 2D and 3D.  Biggest issue is learning the stuff.

Joe,

T-square, 30-60-90 triangle, 45-45-90 triangle, scale, pencil and paper.
All for about ten dollars, if your up on the technology.  ;-)

Sorry, I just had to, Dan H.

The time has come to graduate from MS Paint and Word as my primary design software.

Any suggestions? Try not to bankrupt me though! :)

Thanks

Joe
