Bill,
I keep a close eye on those European
boys too.
I was disappointed to hear (read) that
UC3 is going to have a "modern" look to it and not the WWII U-Boat design
that was first considered. I don't know if you read that or not but
apparently, the design team realized how well Kraka operated under schnorkel and
so they decided it was feasible to make a sub that ran on the diesel while
remaining submerged, hence, the switch to the modern design for better
hydrodynamics. (Likely easier to build too). Too bad, I would have loved
to see UC3 as a mini U-boat with a waterproof BBQ on the wintergarten or
something. Sitting up there with the boys on a sunny Sunday would be
heaven. I would have stuck with the U-Boat design myself. They are
things of beauty in my opinion. What I wouldn't give to be a part of that
design / construction team. "Will work for food".
I agree, I like Kraka better than
Needlefish but I can certainly appreciate the fact that either one of them
actually got built, which is more than I can say. I wonder what Kraka
would fetch on e-bay or what Madsen has invested in it (money wise)
?
As for Euronaut, what can a guy
say....incredible. Carsten remains one of my heros.
I've been saving my pennies for two years now
($12,000 so far), as well as contemplating the sale of my '69 Camaro in order to
fund my project. I've got a ways to go yet but, the very fact that I
haven't touched the money in that account tells me I'm motivated in the right
direction. Right now, it's all about getting some money together and doing
a ton of research. I figure I won't be putting the torch to
anything any time soon but, I'm still hanging in there with my
dreams.
Its guys like Gifford, Madsen,
Stanfuss, Kittredge, and the like that keep us mere mortals focused. "It
can be done."
Myles.
