Brian,
Bee keeper .....cool. One of my
colleagues used to do that. Hard work from what I gather.
....anyway,
My view is, the internet being what it
is, if a guy told me he's built a thousand subs, I wouldn't believe him. I
take the information I find on "the net" analyze, discuss, debate, "check into",
and otherwise scrutinize until I come up with my own opinion on that info.
Some guys might be full of BS while others truely have expertise. It's up
to each and every one of us to sort that out before we jump in some tank and
sink it to the bottom of a lake. I just think the open discussion allows
for more opportunity to be enlightened on things, much like I recently was about
using diesel exhaust gasses to purge the ballast tanks.
I'm verbose at times, sorry.
Myles

Myles,
Ok
maybe that is a stupid idea. But it is kind of nice knowing who exactly
you are talking to. I am just a dumb ass beekeeper who is also trying to
build a sub. I definitely do not wish to appear like I am trying to
curtail open discussion. Discuss away!!

Brian,
I'm siding with Bill on this
one...mainly because I'm such a novice that I'm like a sponge at this
point. I'm sure I've pissed people off with questions that have been
asked a million times. Kudos to you if you have an extensive knowledge
base, I wish I was in that position and hope to be someday. If I do
get there, I won't be riding high on my horse, thinking I'm some sort
of pro PSUBmariner or something. Credentials ?...you gotta be
kidding me. There is a very good chance that some very sharp minds
that have never built a sub, or ever will build a sub, but still have
an interest and so enjoy being in the mail loop and adding their
input, could be found in mail lists just like this. I value
this, I'm sure others do. If you don't like the mail, delete it.
I don't want to miss out on something that someone might add because they
are afraid to comment because they don't have "credentials" *the very
thought makes me laugh* Don't get me wrong, guys like Capt. KITTREDGE
have much to offer some "wet behind the ears" newbie like myself, but that
doens't mean I don't value the comments of, say, some local mechanic, who
might be able to enlighten me on how a diesel engine works. Not to
mention getting a laugh or two about some guy's story.
*arrogance....my God*
Maybe try the "I am a PSUB God" mail list, it
might be more your liking, they weed out all the riff raff.

More disscusion does not equal more knowledge
gained.
I think that maybe as people post on
this message board that it could be helpful if those involved could have
some credentials listed by their name; like "have working sub" or
"designed and build 1 atm sub" or "designed and built ambient
sub". Most on in this group kind of know whos who so it's not a big
deal, especially if you've been to one of the conventions.

I thought this WAS the definitive chat room
for sub discussion. The more discussion, the more knowledge gained. The
more knowledge gained, the more education and safer
designs.
I've seen periods of very little postings
here. Which is better?
Bill.

Carbon Fiber. It's been used for years and
is nothing new. Spend some time traveling through the Internet
before you make unnecessary mail for every one. Why don't you
guys go join a chat room some place. Fiber glass works
fine too. I know your excited about submarines and I understand
but if you go to the archives of this site you'll find out all kinds
of good stuff with out all this e mail.
Simon,
My limited experience in
this has shown me that steel is used because of the cost
factor. I guess dollar for dollar, it is the cheapest and
easiest material to work with. As far as weight is
concerned, the subs NEED weight anyway so why not incorporate some
of that into the pressure hull with steel ? ...that's
how it seems to me.
Myles.

[PSUBS-MAILIST] carbon fibre
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but
why hasn't anybody made a pressure hull out of carbon fibre?
Apparently it's 5 times as strong as steel, and good for
reinforcing aluminium. Sounds like a logical, light-weight,
low-cost
alternative
