My sub have that safety feature. But I installed
valves on the outside of the sub. So if I pass-out, the divers can operate the
valves and fill the ballast tanks. As you said, it is very easy to make and
cheap also.
There is 3 valves. 1 for venting the bottom of the
tanks, 1 for high-pressure air inside the tank, and 1 for cutting the top vent
in case when i pass-out I had the top vent inside the sub open.

A idea to make your psub a little safer..
If a small psub is for one or another reason out of
compressed air or the pilot has a blackout, the support or standby divers can
do little or nothing.
If you place an inflator hose connector to the lower
side of the MBT or on top side with a sifon tube, divers can blow the MBT
from the outside.
It is a low risk but it cost almost nothing in
time an money. No valves needed!
I placed this connectors on Pepper's and Carsten also
thinks it is a good idea.
