Yea you assumed correctly and i like your idea. dono why i didnt think of that its less prone to inaccuracy because its mush simpler to check the setting with the gage. i have some questions about BIG:

how dose BIGs hatch seel? how did you make that seel?
i noticed that thr is a hatch clip on the outside, can it also be opned from the inside? how? How dose air go from the scuba tanks into the hull? how is the brathing air flow regulated?
Dose BIG have a web page?

I like your idea.

As for (3) emergency use, I assume that one side of the piston (the side with the spring) must be at 1atm of else you would only mesure pressure difference...

I have another idea. If instead of using spring you use compressed air on one side of the cylinder. So you want max deep of 100 foot (50 psi). you slowly open a valve from air tank and adjust pressure inside cylinder to 50 psi with a gage. That way, it could be easy to adjust and also be variable adjustement for any situation.

We could also used electricity for valves because lots of pneumatic cylinder already commes with limit switches mounted on the core of the cylinder. Off the shelf and ready to use.

My 2 cents to your idea...

I have posted a picture on moki. It shows the basic principle of a methord that could be used to regulate (three things) (1) the air pressure difference between water and in hull. (2) Vent air out of an ambieus sub. (3) automaticaly bring the sub back to the surface if it goes under a preset depth (too near crush depth or Air related depths)

(example) the idea is 1 lubricated water proof piston with two open sides. one open side exposed to the outer water pressure and the other to the inside pressure. The displacement from its central position due to presure difference is used to open - close two valves. one valve leads to the breathing air suply the other (2) IS the air out vent.(link to image at bottom)

Adjustable spring(s) could be used to controle the sensetivity of this system. This could if implimented correctly be used to reduce the probability of the piston bouncing up and down effect and reduce the amount of air wasted due to small vertical movements.

How to use this as an emergency system (3) one could for example use a stiffer spring to encrease the pressure needed to activate a valve and increase the distance the piston must move before the valve is activated. In this case the activated valve would be a secondairy blow ballast valve.
