RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Stupid Idea was Burst Valve

Another simple idea for drop weight release is using a small hydraulic pump
to actuate a small hydraulic Ram to drop the weight. This system is easy to
implement and does not rely on electricity. With this you get the mechanical
advantage of hydraulics to drop the weight, and the penetration can be set
anywhere where is convenient. I have seen these being used sucessfully to
drop led trays with 5 Tons of led.

I think a more important thing to think about is dropable weight
(either in the form of a lead drop weight or ditch-able battery pods).
If it's ditchable battery pods then make sure your power connectors
don't hang you up (relying on on a plastic locking ring to break would
be a big mistake, heck I've had 16 pin subconn connectors vacuum lock
and take 10 minutes of prying around and around to get loose).

You would use either explosive bolts or a manual through-hull shaft. I
like the manual through hole shaft, just make sure it isn't setup in a
way that relies on having the weights to keep it from being shot into
the sub by the ambient pressure (as in you just put a bolt through an
O-ring sealed hole into the weight assembly).
