[PSUBS-MAILIST] Lake Submarines WWI Foreign Service

Jeff is a great resource when it comes to Lake submarines. He holds what is left of Simon Lake's archives. A review of the literature indicates that Russia's Lake submarines were reired by the time the World War I started. This was a very dynamic time for submarines, technology was quickly evolving, and a submarine that was just a few years old would become obsolete. Polmar's and Noot's "Submarines of the Russian and Soviet Navies, 1718-1990" is a good reference (there is another, but can't readily find it in my large submarine library).

It appears that Austro-Hungary's U-1 and U-2 built by Lake participated in WW I and operated by the Italians unitl 1920 as part of war reparations. Reference: "S.M. Unterseeboote das K.U.K. Unterseebootswesen 1907-1918" by Pawlik and Bumgartner.
Respectfully,
Jay K. Jeffries

Hi Larry.

Sorry it took so long to get back with you about your question on whether any of Simon Lake's subs built for Russian saw combat in WW1, but I was looking up

every Simon Lake website I could find trying to find out if any of his subs built for Russia saw combat in WW1.

Finally I found a site that is hosted by his great grandson Jeff Lake. Jeff told me none were used to his knowledge.

I include Jeff Lake's e mail to me below.

Kindest Regards,

Bill Akins.
