Stan:
This is a pretty nested problem, and I'm always up for a pissing contest
about planetary/Galactic/Cosmic motion. This is my turf!
So, with tounge firmly in cheek and depending on your anality (new word!):
Motion from Earths rotational speed = 0.460e+3 x cos(latitude) m/s
Motion from earth around earth-moon system = 13 m/s
Earths orbital motion = 30 e+3 m /s
Solar motion about solar system gravity well = 12m/s
Motion through the Galaxy = 20 e+3 m/s, towards Constellation Hercules.
Rotation of the Galaxy = 300 e+3 m /s
Galaxy movment through the intergalactic medium = ~600e+3 m /s - towards
Leo I think.
blah blah blah.
The neat thing is, the plane of our solar system is not paralell with
that of the Galaxy, so things don't add up as nicely as you would hope.
I think you can be pretty accurate just by saying we move at 600 km/s..
relative to what??
The cosmic background!! tadaa!! - scary but true. - google 'cosmic
background dipole'
My submarine is moving at ~600km/s, and it isn't even built yet. - I
wonder how many 16lb minn-kota motors are needed to get that kind of
speed.....
Ok, I'm done with my bit of pissing. This thread has gotten out of hand.
EM.
P.S.Caribbean water is about 20 degrees C today.

Hey Carsten;
The relative speed varies depending on night or day, does it not?
During the night, the rotational speed of the earth is added to the
orbital speed, and during the day the rotational speed of the earth is
subtracted from the orbital speed. Or maybe it is the other way
around. Or maybe not. I haven't taken the time to work through it.
In English, we call this "tongue in cheek," another name for "bullshit".
Waiting for more photos of Euronaut...

Speed of behemoth sub base on earth ground is right with 0 km/h =
0 knts
Speed base on earth rotaion is
U = D x pi with D = 12730 km and pi = 3,1415
U = 39992 km at one day of 24 hours
so speed is 39992/24 = 1666 km/ hour or about 900 knots around the
earth
centerpoint.
Based on rotating earth around the sun is
about 29,78 km/sec or 107208 km/hour or 57888 knots.. not calculating
the earth rotation.
So which one os right for the sub = O , 900 or 57888 knots.. ?
