Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] mystery detectives

Hello William
German submarines were also patroling the caribbean and were very famous among the smuglers because they paid well and in gold for fruits, rum (very important) and other stuff they needed for their long trips far away from home.  But some of them were lost, at least one was sunk in the south caribbean.
Best wishes
Juergen

Don't know if listmembers are aware of USA PBS TV show "mystery detectives"
which airs locally on Monday nights 8:00 PM. It's had several sub shows
recently and tonight's was about a Uboat sunk off the coast of Maine in 1945.
The props from this sub were recoved by a mysterious treasure hunter and the
question of their origin was the mystery solved by this episode. I didn't know
the amazing extent of uboat action off the east coast during ww2. Apparently
much of it was kept secret to prevent public alarm and some info only recently
declassified such as that covered by this segment. The navy even denied that
one of its ship was attacked by this particular uboat, claiming instead that it
sank because of a boiler explosion. This show said over 400 ships were sunk off
eastern coast by uboats which cruised along the coastline and that one reason
for the secrecy was to conceal an intercepted plan by Germany to use uboats to
haul sea-launchable V2s to attack the interior of Manhattan. Apparently that
plan was more imagination than substance. Great show.
