Excellent answer, thank you Carsten!

What is the cost of x-ray testing and/or dye testing a length of weld?
I would like to know:

How much the equipment costs to purchase and/or to rent, and how much
the consumables (x-ray film? Chemicals?) costs, and if the operator
must be certified, etc...

I suppose the welds must be tested as the vessel is constructed... if
only for accessibility reasons. Is that true?

How much would it cost me to have all the welds in a K-350 fully
tested, and can I do it myself with the proper equipment or must I hire
the testing out?

Please pardon my ignorance,

Chuck

P.S. Carsten, did you have the welds in the Euronaut tested? If so,
what percentage of the hull's cost went into testing? Did you have to
have any of the welding ground out and re-done?

Hi Charles, all mayjory pressure welds onto Euronaut are x-rayed.

See picure seven at : http://www.euronaut.org/bau.htm
The two guys just fix the film inside - the unit is outside
- and offline if people close to.

Is was part of the contract I have with the boiler company which build
the pressure hull according to my drawings.
In the contract there were two major quality definitions :

X-ray the welds. Or if on some places not possible make a spray coulor
test. X-ray all weld-crossings.
Messuring of the roundness of the frames before build them was the other
point.

For a small sub, I would say it is maybe a good idear to phone a boiler
company and ask them when they have the next x-ray test on some of there
boilers - and than put your boat on this day to this company and they
will make some picture/films more. Is maybe the cheapest solution.

I think the test on Euronaut went the hole day and cost about 1200
Dollar. You can not rent the equipment and the test has to be done by
professional personal. Everbody has to leave the shop in a radius of 17
m (56 feet) wen the unit is working.

The pressure welds on euronaut are done by modern automatic weld robots.
No weld has a failture and I have all flims here at my home.

I take a scan of a film for moki - but unfortunatly the scan was much
to dark - so i didn't send it..

The boat should be only pressure hull during the x-ray test time and
on rollers to turn it .. But to make a deep test is also an option.
I am a german so I will do both...

Regards Carsten.
