Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Golf Cart Motor over Hydraulic
There pluses and minuses to consider, I'm sure. I just can't find the
pluses of a hydraulic drive for a small sub.
First, there is the power loss. Yes as Peter says, you can make it up with
more available power, but it's still a loss in either power or space and
battery cost.
Second, there is the noise of hydraulics. The drive motor is noisy but a
pump is really noisy, and in the hull with you. My electric motors create
noise, but in external pods and not nearly very loud at all.
Third, now you have high pressure oil to deal with. Take it from a guy with
experience showering off oil. Three days ago I was operating my backhoe and
blew a hose. It wasn't the first time I took an oil bath and I'm sure it
won't be the last. I wouldn't want to be submerged, blow a line and have to
breath the air. Much of the oil gets atomized. Also the oil clean up
inside or outside of the sub can be an issue.
An electrical thruhull isn't that difficult to make. I've made several. A
controller for electric motor speed isn't any more expensive then a flow
control for hydraulics. Unlike tires on the asphalt, the prop in the water
already gives you the cushion effect that hydraulics can offer so there is
no advantage there either. There isn't much of a reason to purchase a pump,
hydraulic motor, hoses and fittings, just to save some on a thruhull.
