Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] PSUBS in Japan

Hi Yukihiko,

I was in singapore a couple of weeks ago and 'floated' the idea of building a sub. Everyone thought it was an exciting idea (and ambitious project) but claimed they would need government permission first and this would not happen :( Problems regarding space to build would also have caused problems.

I often work in Malaysia and mentioned psubs to some there. Malaysia has some pretty skilled people in all areas, but overall this is financially impossible for most. This will also change as disposable incomes in the middle class increase. There are obviously wealthy people in Malaysia that could just buy one - but these people are also less likely to want to design and build one themselves. Of the asian areas I have spent some time, I believe the general population is not quite ready for these types of personal projects.

Regarding japanese mini-subs built during WWII there is an interesting display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. 3 mini-subs sneaked into sydney harbour. They got through the netted harbour by following the Manly commuter ferry (directly under it as the nets were opened to let it through). My uncle was on the ferry and my aunt was at the Manly wharf (waiting to greet him) when the toredo attack occurred. No real damage was done, the torpedos missed the wharf, ran up the beach and took out some of the stone retaining wall.

Whilst I don't know all the details precisely, I believe that 2 of the subs were destroyed by depth charges and the third was know to be damaged/destroyed but never found. A diver claimed to have found this only a few years ago, but I have heard no more.

The 2 recovered subs have now been 'spliced' together for display (neither one was intact), but you can walk/squeeze between the pieces and see inside. Its been a while since I had a look. Anyone want me to hunt down some pics?

cheers
peter

PS I am in Sydney for a few days and pursuing the Collins class sub models (amongst far too many other things hahaha)

Hello from TOKYO,

I am interested in PSUB in Japan actually :-)
Yes, Japanese like to use robotics for small Subs.

Keep in touch and networking.

Yours Sincerely,
Yukihiko YOSHIDA
