[PSUBS-MAILIST] hot sub

I went diving yesterday and had an interesting conversation with the dive boat operator. It turns out Graham Hawkes was here (Key Biscayne, FL) some months ago with Aviator and a Discovery film crew. They hired the dive boat to tow Aviator out to dive sites and back. The tows were almost 2 hours each way, and Graham had to be aboard for the entire two-way trip on account of low freeboard preventing the domes being opened at sea. Here's the interesting bit I hadn't thought of... the temperature in Aviator's cabin reached 120 degrees (that would be 49 Celsius) during the tows. They were putting wet towels on the acrylic domes during the tow, and on one occasion turned back and aborted the dive because of the heat. BTW the water temperature yesterday was 80F / 27C. I presume there was no machinery heat source on the boat since Aviator was just being towed, but the two acrillyc domes must have worked well as greenhouses, there is some black anodized aluminum, and the sub is painted deep blue. I guess this is another reason to paint your boat silver or white!

cheers,

Alec
