Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Re: Ballast release details

Carsten,

I am using a small, spring-extended, hydraulic cylinder (1 inch bore, 1/2
inch rod and 1 inch stroke) that is bolted beneath my hull that supports my
340 lb drop weight. I have an onboard Automationdirect.com PLC and a small
Monarch hydraulic power unit that interfaces with the emergency drop weight
system. Pilot can drop the emergency weight either by touching a button on
the PLC touch screen or, in case of electrical power failure, with a small
hydraulic hand pump(meets ABS rule of being able to release emergency drop
weight without electrical power). The advantage of having the emergency
drop weight control pass through the PLC is that if the pilot is unconscious
and the boat drops 10% below my maximum operating depth, PLC will
automatically retract the hydraulic cylinder and jettison the drop weight.
With this system, hull penetration is only a hydraulic fitting thus
minimizing leak paths. Since I was using the HPU for control surface
actuation and for longitudinal trim adjustment, adding articulation of the
drop weight was not incrementally difficult. If I were not already using a
PLC, I would still use the same hydraulic cylinder but just use the
hydraulic hand pump.

Cliff
