Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Diameter Size
Tarek,
All subs are awkward to the occupant. Only the big ones and maybe the all
acrylic ones give some sort of comfort. Even the passengers of the most
famous sub Alvin complain about stiff legs, cold and so on. I suggest you
have a look in the Busby book page 161 (Nekton, very succesfull subs),
page169 (Paulo) and page 205 (Snooper). You will see that you can keep it
smaller. The Busby book is available on Internet (Psubs website).
The steel thickness is not the only thing that matters when you talk about
strength. There is the kind of steel you use and the reinforcements. As far
as i know all cilindrical subs have reinforcement rings in the cilindrical
body made out of T-shaped profiles. The pressure vessel of a sub is
completely different from a vessel that is exposed to internal pressure. A
test depth of 300 mtr. is a little exaggerated for a 100 mtr. sub, but a
sound calculation of the pressure hull is something inevitable. As a teacher
maybe you can engage some technical students in the project. They will
probably love making FEA calculations of the hull.
For further information i suggest you have a look at the PSUBS archive.
Almost everthing concerning submersibles has been discussed before. Other
sources are the Busby book and the ABS rules (
http://www.eagle.org/rules/downloads/07-UWVS2002.pdf ).
Good luck,
