I have a proposition for those who want the
safety that the American Bureau of Shipping offers. I will do all the hull
calculations that the ABS requires of you and tell you what
maximum operating depth your sub is good for. I am not offering to
design anyone's sub, I would just tell you what the ABS would tell you
if you hired them do the calculations on your design. This of
course, would not be a free service. I am an engineer and do this stuff for a
living, not subs, but general engineering. The nice thing about the ABS is that
they ensure a factor of safety, while a bit conservative, you might be surprised
at how overbuilt your sub design really is or isn't. Overbuilding a sub
might give some feeling of safety, but ultimately, you would
be wasting money.
