Been there, done that!  Either I was doing something wrong or it's just not
worth messing with batteries.  By the time you deal with all the other stuff
in a battery and all the corroded lead, it's not worth it for the little
good lead you get.  Heck, there are tire shops from coast to coast with
wheel weights that are cleaner, more concentrated lead and easier to handle.
