Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hey, looky, rocket fuel as ballast!
i was just re- reading some of these messages and then an idea came to me. what about using lift bags used by salvage divers attached to the sub. these could be inflated like a baloon with compressed air or another gas. some have a lifting force of 1,000 lb or more. you could put 2 or 3 on a sub for a seccond to last resort before dropping weight. they could be powered by an auxilary stand alone air system. very simple and manually actuated. once on the surface the bags could be deflated and rolled up again and the air tanks reloaded. sounds fun huh?

Sounds like it's time for somebody to do an experiment.

Hey Again,
While that is true, and I seem to recall it is N2 gas
from a catalyst powder, it happens rather fast. In
fact, so fast as to not leave the water in anything
other than a completely open bottomed tank time to
escape before hitting overpressure. In other words,
your tank will likely pop before it can drain. Not to
mention causing a good deal of strong, sudden movement
for the whole boat. Maybe even enough shock wave to
damage any parts that may live inside the BT. Another
potential downside is the powder being exposed to
water most likely would stop it from functioning
properly or even working at all. Perhaps if the
reaction were started inside a small, dry HP tank and
vented slower it would do nicely though.
